Adam Bacher is a commercial photographer and photojournalist based in Portland, Oregon. He made his first trip to Rwanda in October 2007, on a grant to photograph the projects of the non-profit, Itafari Foundation (www.itafari.org). After returning, he joined Itafari’s board of directors to work with the group and its dedication to affording Rwandans the opportunity for a better life and the ability to make it a reality.
He has gone back to Rwanda two more times, most recently in November 2009, continuing to record the countries’ recovery from the genocide in 1994, which claimed the lives of one-million people in the course of one-hundred days. Adam is working to document the people of Rwanda, the strength of their accomplishments, the sorrow of their history, and the depth of their character. The Rwandans are an example of the potential of the human spirit to triumph over the worst of circumstances. They have many lessons to teach the world about peace.
Adam exhibits and speaks nationally about his work, offering a provocative visual and journalistic insight into contemporary Rwanda and the recovery, reconciliation, and reconstruction of the physical and social fabric of the country. His message of hope, peace, diversity and cultural sensitivity, has been enthusiastically received at peace conferences, corporate gatherings, and in public schools.
He tells audiences stories of people who are not very different from you or I, presenting a narrative of Rwandans as part of the plurality of our common human identity. We all have similar aspirations for comfortable shelter, full stomachs, steady employment, health care, schooling for our children, and happy stable relationships.
In his home town of Portland, Oregon, Adam Bacher has been a small business owner and freelance photographer since 1991. He specialize in commercial location photography for businesses. The majority of this work is for architectural, corporate, editorial, and public relations clients, and appears in a variety of print and electronic media.
