About

Adam Bacher is a commercial photographer and photojournalist based in Portland, Oregon.  He made his first trip to Rwanda in October 2007, on a grant to photograph the projects of the non-profit, Itafari Foundation (www.itafari.org). After returning, he  joined Itafari’s board of directors to work with the group and its dedication to affording Rwandans the opportunity for a better life and the ability to make it a reality.

He has gone back to Rwanda two more times, most recently in November 2009, continuing to record the countries’ recovery from the genocide in 1994, which claimed the lives of one-million people in the course of one-hundred days. Adam is working to document the people of  Rwanda, the strength of their accomplishments, the sorrow of their history, and the depth of their character.  The Rwandans are an example of the potential of the human spirit to triumph over the worst of  circumstances.  They have many lessons to teach the world about peace.

Adam exhibits and speaks nationally about his work, offering a provocative visual and journalistic insight into contemporary Rwanda and the recovery,  reconciliation, and reconstruction of the physical and social fabric of the country.  His message of hope, peace, diversity and cultural sensitivity, has been enthusiastically received at peace conferences, corporate gatherings, and in public schools.

He tells audiences stories of people who are  not very different from you or I, presenting a narrative of Rwandans as part of the plurality of our common human identity.  We all have similar aspirations for comfortable shelter, full stomachs, steady employment, health care, schooling for our children, and happy stable relationships.

In his home town of Portland, Oregon, Adam Bacher has been a small business owner and freelance photographer since 1991.  He specialize in commercial location photography for businesses.  The majority of this work is for architectural, corporate, editorial, and  public relations clients, and appears in a variety of print and electronic media.  You can view samples online at: www.adambacher.com.

I'm a rando that happened upon your site while searching for some photos of the Millennium Villages Project in Mayange. Just wanted to let you know your photographs are beautiful. I spent time in Rwanda last year, and your photos bring back a lot of memories. You did a great job, thanks!

Great to see my imaginings are a reality. I am a college instructor at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College. I have often thought that teaching sewing to people from Africa would be a great thing. The fashion industry in Africa. Do you need any more teachers?
Good luck to all of you

Amazing how when we are behind a camera the courage it gives us. We can without fear throw ourselves into the most dangerous places with extreme hardships and know in our heart that we are guided and protected from something bigger than ouselves. Thank you for the courage and for exercising your gift on this very important project that helps us see the beauty, the love, the humour, and the soul behind a troubled area. I know from having traveled myself to area's like this that we leave with such an appreciation and respect for the most simple things in life and learn to see the beauty in things we didn't see before. IT'S A GREAT JOURNEY! Adam you don't know me but I live on Maui the same island as your Aunty Linda who emailed this blog to her friend she met in Bali called Judith :) Judith knows my sister Gail and Gail emailed me your website from Manchester England :) So now you know.

Keep up the good work and be sure to look me up when on Maui Hawaii.

    Respect and Hugs

    Adam:

Congratulations on applying your always excellent photography to this new and beneficial effort. But, young man, I understand that your environment can be dangerous. . . I was around when you entered this world and I don't want to be around when you leave. "f8 and be there" is best modified to "f11 and be home."
    Best regards -

    Adam,
Great work so far. But, where are the golfers?
Do they have a nice buffet for you at lunch? You'll learn to appreciate the sports photographers environment.
Seriously, keep up the good work.
Wish I was with you over there. Great opportunity. Make the best of it my friend.
    Rich
