Goats for Child Headed Households (10-02-2007)

The Itafari Foundation, in cooperation with Assist – Rwanda (a local NGO), as well as the Rwandan government, have partnered up for a first of its kind  goat demonstration project.  They are raising and distributing goats to cooperatives of child headed households.  Together the children will breed and sell goats to support themselves and have a viable business to lift them out of subsistence poverty.

In Portland I photograph fundraising events for Itafari.  I never leave without buying a goat. In the last two years I’ve bought 8. Today I had the opportunity to visit with them, face to face. Making a small monetary donation is much easier, and cleaner, then helping to build the goat pen.

At $25.00 each, a goat is a wonderful way to make a difference in the life of a child that has so little compared to us. I would like to ask you to please consider helping support this extraordinary work the Itafari Foundation is doing,  http://itafari.org .  You can give directly through their secure website, or send a check to Itafari Foundation, 27 El Greco, Lake Oswego, OR 97035. Hi, I accidentally stumbled upon this site while looking for a picture of a goat....to be used in a presentation about how my English class and teacher raised money to buy a goat for a needy family after reading a story about a girl whose entire life was changed for the better because she was given a goat. I thought it was funny that I ended up on this site with the first picture I clicked, and I admire what The Itafari Foundation is doing very much.

Powerful seems too puny a word to describe the impact of your work from Rwanda, Adam. Thanks again for bringing these stories and your superb photography to those of us living the easy life in the USA. I just bought two goats, one from me and one from Debra. We're thilled to be able to help in any small way.
    Travel safe. Love from California,
    Joe

Thanks, Adam, for the beautiful pictures of the goats - I bought my first one yesterday (maybe that cute little black and white one?).

Your pictures are stunning and I'm looking forward to seeing more great pictures of the trip.
